German churches roll out free WiFi ‘Godspots’

Churches in Berlin are rolling out free WiFi ‘Godspots’ for their congregation and tourists.

The Protestant Church of Berlin, Brandenburg and Silesian Oberlausitz will offer the Internet service to guests inside the church and the grounds.

Users will be greeted with a Church homepage but after that can browse the web and check email – without needing to log in with a password, reports Deutsche Welle.

“What we’re doing is the right step, it’s a decisive step and it’s a necessary step when you see safe and trustworthy communication as an important topic,” Fabian Kraetschmer told DW.

”With Godspot we want to build a Protestant Church that’s a safe and familiar abode in the digital world.”

Germany has attracted criticism for its poor levels of free Internet with just two WiFi hotspots for every 10,000 people.
