Christianity in South Korea has grown from just 1% in 1900 to 29% in 2010, making it the country’s biggest religion.
The incredible growth led to Pope Francis making a visit to Asia in 2014, even though just 11% of South Korea’s Christians are Catholic.
These six facts about Christianity in South Korea from The Pew Research Centre shed light on religious change in the region.
Among data from several groups, it was found that while 29% per cent of South K0rea are Christians and 23% Buddhist, 49% have no religious link.
And although most of the Christians are Protestant, 89% said they viewed the Pope favourably.
Interestingly, the South Korean government was found to have low levels of restrictions on religion – even lower than the U.S. and other countries in the in the Asia-Pacific region.
