Paris Saint-Germain defensive rock David Luiz insists his faith in Jesus Christ is the driving force behind his glittering career
Brazilian international David Luiz has been inspired by the faith of his teammate Kaka and now frequently wears t-shirts blazoned with, ‘God is faithful’.
The defender makes no bones about his beliefs and even has stickers saying, ‘Christ is life’ and ‘God is faith’ on the car he drives to training.
“My faith gives me the belief that I can go out and perform and improve as a player,” he says.
“It gives me strength and inspiration.
“Everything in life belongs to God. Our purpose has already been mapped out.”
Luiz, a natural centre-back with a profound ability to drill free kicks home, made a declaration that he would abstain from sex before marriage to honour his faith.
“I chose to wait,” he said. “The majority of people say that after marriage, they don’t like jumping into bed with their partner because there is no desire.
“However, this is not true, my wife is the person I love and it was worth waiting.
“I think people need to prevent themselves from making love before marriage.
Of course, everyone has their own opinions but I think it was worth the wait.”
The now PSG superstar was baptised at Hillsong Church and following his public announcement of faith in Jesus Christ, he posted a picture of himself in the water on Instagram.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17,” he quoted.
