This month is one of the most important in our Movement for many years, and I shall allude to the reason a little later in this editorial.
On bonfire night, some children may be chanting, “Remember, remember the fifth of November.” Three days later adults will be holding a minute’s silence on Remembrance Sunday as we reflect on those who gave their lives on the battlefield in the service of our country in wars before we were born and conflicts more current.
On November 14, 26 and 28 our Movement’s centenary celebrations will be held as we look back 100 years and look forward into all that we believe God has for Elim in the years to come.
These are three of twelve occasions when I will be ministering at venues across the UK.
But there is an occasion perhaps more pivotal than all of these. It is the period in November when the National Leadership Team will select the name of the person to be nominated to Conference as the next leader of our Movement – our future General Superintendent.
I am asking every one of the 20,000 people who read Direction each month to remember to pray for us as we approach the process during our meetings from November 2–5.
When the name has been selected it will be submitted by postal ballot to all ministers and lay representatives who are eligible to vote. If the person nominated achieves the required 66 per cent majority of those voting, the GS-elect will be known by the end of the year and come into office on the last day of our leadership conference in May next year.
The initial term of office is four years, and anyone who is an ordained minister is eligible. The role of General Superintendent is defined in our constitution as ‘the spiritual leader of the Movement with particular responsibility for giving leadership to the National Leadership Team’.
Please remember to pray as this month commences not just for the nomination process but for wisdom for those who will make the ultimate decision. Why not use the letters ELIM as a template for your prayers?
Expectant – this is a pivotal point in the life of the Movement
Listening – that all involved in the process will be able to hear God accurately
Inspired – that when selected our new leader will sense the anointing of God upon their life as they prepare to take up the role in a few months’ time
Momentum – God has great things for our Movement in the days that are ahead. Our centenary reminds us of the faithfulness of God in the past but we are believing for an even better future
We need also to remember that while we rejoice in all that God is doing through Elim, we are just a part of his overall plan and purpose for the Church in the nation, and success will never be fully realised until we remember the strength that comes from unity of heart and purpose with others.
