British believers should be grateful to God for a monarch like ours
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has long been recognised as a remarkable example of dedication to the role that life dealt her.
For more than six decades she has been a symbol of stability and dignity through some of the most turbulent and challenging years that our nation Commonwealth has known.
More recently, however, she has taken the opportunity of her Christmas broadcasts to become an evangelist. Always careful to speak to people of all faiths and none, The Queen has nevertheless made it abundantly clear that she herself is a Christian, and on one memorable occasion went so far as to invite others to follow Christ, quoting the carol, ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’, which asks ‘What can I give him, poor as I am?’ and answers ‘Yet what I can I give him – give my heart.’
Of course, there are those who feel she should speak about sin and salvation, heaven and hell, but I reckon that British believers should be grateful to God for a monarch who has been a shining example of the humanity, poise and purpose that an active faith in Christ should produce.
I have yet to hear any other Western head of state make remarks that are even remotely comparable, never mind provide such an example of selfless dedication to her country.
We are delighted to carry a major feature celebrating Her Majesty’s 90th birthday and I hope every reader will join me in praying that the Lord will bless her with favour and strength for her very often thankless task.
This is the clear Bible command to every believer (1 Tim 2), and surely all the more vital as we approach the referendum that will have such a profound effect on the future of our nation.
