David LittlewoodWELCOME

It must be over 25 years ago that I made my first mission trip – to India.Like many things we try for the first time, it was not a complete success. For a start we went at the wrong time of the year and the heat was overpowering. We were also nearly eaten alive by mosquitoes. However, we had a glimpse of a country which became something of a fascination to me and which I have revisited on a number of occasions.
But it was on that first trip that I met a man who more than any other has defined my image of a biblical apostle. He was a short, rather portly man from Coimbatore named JobGnanaprakasam. During his many years of sacrificial ministry, Job travelled vast distances – often by public transport to plant churches in his native country. As a legacy to hisministry, the organisation he founded – the Indian Pentecostal Assemblies – has grown to more than 600 churches over Indiaand beyond. A few years ago I had the privilege of researching and writing an official history of the IPA and my article on Job Gnanaprakasam, who died in March this year, is based on that research. It is, I trust, a fitting memorial to a true Christian great.
A man who pioneered in a very different area is someone most people have probably never heard of – an Anglican clergyman called EHJ Nash. But to a whole generation of public schoolboys Nash – known as ‘Bash’ by just about everyone who knew him – was a spiritual mentor who organised youth camps where the sons of the rich and privileged could hear about Christ. Nash’s vision was narrow – ‘to reach the best boys from the best schools’ – but startlingly effective. In fact this humble, unobtrusive man has been credited with being a major catalyst in the post-war evangelical renaissance in the Anglican Church.
Yet another area of outreach was pioneered by the incredible Thomas Barnardo. An aspiring missionary, Barnardo’s vision was radically changed when he saw the misery of destitute children living on the streets of London. A man of unbelievable energy and entrepreneurial skills, with thinking years ahead of his time, Barnardo plunged headlong into his philanthropic ventures, devising fundraising methods that are still used today in the modern charity industry. The only factor common to these three men was their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; that, combined with incredible tenacity and application, made them into heroes of the faith. We pray their stories will inspire you to do the same.
