Inspiring a generation.

David LittlewoodAs I look back over nearly 50 years of Christian service, I thank God for the men and women who have been an inspiration to me. One man I knew personally in the latter years of his life was the missionary, Harold Womersley.

Although old age had infirmed his body, Harold’s mind and spirit were as keen as ever as I sat by his bedside and he told me tales of his adventures in the then Belgian Congo. It was amazing to think that the elderly gent sitting before me had once literally been where no white man had ever been before.

Looking at this grand old man, still full of faith and spiritual vigour, I could imagine what an interview with the patriarch Abraham must gave been like! It was a great privilege, then, to have none other than Harold Womersley lay hands on me and pray for me at my induction as a minister. Perhaps his prayer was one of the reasons I have visited Africa more than 20 times during my own years of ministry.

Inspiration can also come from the pages of history, from reading about people we have never known personally. One wonders, for example, just how many people have been inspired by the story of a simple Welsh girl who loved the Bible so much that she walked 25 miles just so she could have her own copy of the Word of God. Certainly many millions of people have been blessed by the work of the Bible Society whose founding was inspired by Mary’s historic walk.

One man who has continued to inspire generations of Christians today through his ministry is Charles Haddon Spurgeon. So powerful was his oratory that his contemporaries named Spurgeon the ‘Prince of Preachers’ and his printed sermons continue to be widely read today. No wonder his church was always crowded to capacity!

It is the job of every generation in the church to spur on the next. I do hope the amazing true stories presented here will encourage every reader to further and more devoted service for Christ. And may I suggest that, if you are an older person reading this magazine, you pass it on to a younger person – perhaps a teenager – to read, with a prayer that they too may be impacted.
