Shortly after I was first elected as General Superintendent 16 years ago I also assumed the role of Editor in Chief of this magazine.
I made that decision as I wanted the publication you are now holding in your hands to reflect not just the vision and values of myself and the National Leadership Team, but also the new culture that we were seeking to inculcate across our Movement.
Early on in that process we engaged New Life Publishing to partner with us in that endeavour, and I have nothing but praise for this excellent Christian company as they worked relentlessly with us to take this vision forward. I want to especially mention Peter Wreford in this regard.
Co-directors Peter and his wife, Helen, though Pentecostals, did not come from an Elim background and there was no little ‘learning curve’ to be assailed to grasp, not just where Elim was at that time, but where I and the NLT saw the Movement going in the future.
Peter came to grasp exactly what we wanted and I still remember holding the first edition of the newly-styled magazine and seeing how perfectly it mirrored precisely what we were looking to attain.
Someone who has been in the background, but nevertheless indispensable to the magazine, is Kath Cooper. Kath, for many years, held a senior role in our missions department and is a daughter of former General Superintendent, Tom Walker. She has been, and continues to be, our proofreader and rarely does any stray syntax or displaced apostrophe escape her notice.
Apart from this page, you will be aware that each month I have produced the ‘GS Diary’ that highlights those places in which I have ministered – although there is necessarily always a gap between the visit and the printed page.
The most important people of course are you – our readers. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of sharing with you something of my journey through these pages as we have travelled together.
As I have visited our churches I have been occasionally been approached by those who have spoken encouragingly of those times when they felt that what they read on this page had connected with their own thinking or had paralleled with a personal experience they were currently going through.
I have appreciated your appreciation.
My successor, Chris Cartwright, is a fine leader, someone with a huge depth of experience and, very importantly as far as Direction is concerned, an excellent writer. I can assure you that you will be challenged and blessed by what you read in future editions of this magazine during the months to come.
