[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][td_text_with_title custom_title=”Thank you, John”]As a leader from a new church/Charismatic background, I’ve come to realise just how influential the Pentecostal movement has been in shaping both the theology and practice of churches like mine.
Sadly, we didn’t always realise the price of pioneering that so many of the early Pentecostals had to pay. Indeed at times, the relationship between Charismatics and Pentecostals wasn’t all it should be. Thank God we Charismatics have learnt some humility and have discovered some wonderful friends among the classical Pentecostals.
I’m delighted and indeed privileged to have the opportunity to write this guest editorial to recognise John Glass as he completes his 16 years as General Superintendent of the Elim movement.
John has become an important friend who I regard as one of the finest leaders I have had the privilege of working alongside. My friendship with John has grown in recent years as he has joined the Council at Evangelical Alliance and was subsequently appointed as its chair. While John is an impressive public leader and communicator, it’s behind the scenes that I have so appreciated John as a man who both ‘lives it’ as well as ‘preaches it’.
John has shown devotion in sending e-mails expressing support, picking up the phone to see how I am doing or taking me to one side after a meeting to give a word of advice or encouragement. In my role as General Director of the Evangelical Alliance, I have always known I can depend on my faithful, godly friend, John Glass.
It was a few years back now that I visited John at Elim’s central hub at the Bible College in West Malvern. Frankly, I was ‘blown away’ by the facilities. Here was an amazing resource base – a series of buildings to be truly proud of and a statement as to John’s leadership over the last 16 years. Here was a 21 st century building, fit for purpose and reflecting an organisation that is passionate about contributing to the ‘mission of God’ in our generation.
As we sat in John’s office looking out over the garden, John was far more interested in telling me about the plans for the centenary celebrations, particularly the evangelism and church-planting initiatives which were being launched. John wasn’t building a monument. These resources – indeed the Elim movement as a whole – was for a purpose: the extension of God’s kingdom and the health of God’s Church.
So I thank God for John, his friendship, his support, but most of all the unique contribution he has brought and indeed will continue to bring to the Church here in the UK and beyond.
