Becoming the first American to strike a hat-trick in the German top flight is quite an accolade.
But for FC Schalke striker Matthew Hoppe, it is all courtesy of God’s gift in his life.
Teenager Hoppe sensationally helped FC Schalke end a 30-match winless run in the German Bundesliga in January.
He is continuing to forge a career in one of Europe’s top leagues and hopes to capture the attention of United States head coach Gregg Berhalter.
Hoppe, who describes himself on social media as ‘Jesus and Schalke footballer’, netted three times in a 4-0 win over Hoffenheim and in the aftermath of the game was quick to give all praise to God.
He said: “I don’t know how to feel. I am excited. I am happy that the team got the win and that I was able to contribute to it. I was obviously surprised but I was ready. I’ve dreamed of this moment and by the grace of God I was given my chance.
“With God, all things are possible.”
Hoppe, who is now becoming a regular starter at FC Schalke, is often found sharing Bible verses on his social media channels too – most recently posting from Psalm 118: “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
