Golfer Scottie Scheffler won his second Masters in three years – and immediately dedicated the victory to God.
The 27-year-old US star claimed another green jacket at the Augusta National Golf Club, winning by an impressive four strokes by finishing on 11 under par for the four rounds.
The New Jersey world number one became only the tenth golfer to become Masters champ twice in three years.
The latest victory was never in doubt, he told the world’s press, as it was pre-ordained.
“I believe today’s plans were already laid out many years ago, and I could do nothing to mess up those plans,” said Scheffler.
“I have been given a gift of this talent, and I use it for God’s glory.
“When I’m out there, I try to compete to the best of my abilities. I feel like that’s how I was designed.”
He added: “My buddies told me this morning, my victory was secure on the cross. And that’s a pretty special feeling, to know I’m secure forever and it doesn’t matter if I win this tournament or lose. My identity is secure forever.”
The $3.6 million winner’s cheque is well timed, with Scheffler’s wife Meredith expecting their first child.
The golfer said his family are his priority, with golf “probably fourth” on his list.
“I feel like playing professional golf is an endlessly not-satisfying career.
“For instance all I can think about right now is getting home. I’m not thinking about the tournament. I’m not thinking about the green jacket. I’m trying to answer your questions, and I’m trying to get home.
“I wish I could soak this in a little bit more. I think you have to fight those things and focus on what’s good. Because winning this golf tournament does not change my identity. My identity is secure, and I cannot emphasize that enough.”
After his first Masters win, Scheffler had already put his profession in perspective, saying: “The reason I play golf is I’m trying to glorify God and all that he’s done in my life. So, for me, my identity isn’t a golf score.”
As she did in 2022, Meredith helped Scheffler to his latest Masters win through her shared faith.
“She sent a lot of prayers,” he said. “My neck was bugging me a little bit. She just prayed for some healing and prayed for a lot of peace out there.
“Meredith always prays for peace because that’s what I want to feel on the golf course: peace and have fun and feel his presence. So that’s her prayer every day. That’s my prayer and I really felt that. I felt at peace.”
