The Bible story of David and Goliath had a modern replay in December when African-American and ‘under-sized’ quarterback Bryce Young lifted the Heisman Trophy, American college football’s highest individual honour.
And before explaining how he overcame all the odds stacked against him, Young was quick to get his priorities straight.
“First and foremost, I’d like to thank my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Without him I couldn’t be here. And through him all things are possible.”
Young went on to thank his parents and coach before he noted how some people counted him out because he didn’t look or play like a ‘typical’ quarterback.
“I’ve always been labelled as someone who’s not the prototype, being an African-American quarterback and being quote-unquote undersized, I’ve always been ruled out. People have told me that I wasn’t going to be able to make it.
“For me, it’s always been about proving to myself what I can accomplish. I’ve always pushed myself to work the hardest and I try my best to do all I can to maximize all that I do. And thanks to the people around me and through the grace of God, I’ve been able to make it here. I’m truly grateful for that.”
Young, who plays for Alabama Crimson Tide, calls himself a ‘Follower of Christ’ and has an image of a cross in his Twitter bio.
