A faith-based organisation taking free healthcare to the world’s poorest people will double its reach through a new vessel.

Mercy Ships has launched The Global Mercy, which joins Africa Mercy in providing life-changing surgeries, education and training local healthcare providers in Africa.

The charity now hopes to perform more than 5,000 surgeries, deliver over 28,000 dental treatments and train more than 2,800 medical professionals every year.

The new ship is 174 metres long, has six operating rooms, 200 beds, a laboratory, general outpatient clinics and eye and dental clinics. It can accommodate 950 people when docked, including 641 crew members.

The patron of Mercy Ships, the Princess Royal, met some of the charity’s volunteer crew at the launch of The Global Mercy in Rotterdam.
