When there’s a six-ounce projectile heading for you at up to 100 mph, it’s wise to have God on your side.
Vancouver Canucks goaltender Spencer Martin has exactly that, with his strong Christian faith emblazoned on his NHL ice hockey mask.
Martin has seized the freedom goalies have in decorating their masks to paint a cross and a reference to the Bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 on the back of his. (“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”)
Martin commissioned Sweden’s Dave Gunnarsson, a renowned mask artist, to create a new design.
He told sportsspectrum.com: “I’ve had different verses on my mask before.
“Jeremiah 29:11. It’s like he’s already been down that road for me, so that kind of breeds confidence into my life and then into my game – I can be at peace with that.”
The 27-year-old Canadian has been vocal about his faith, previously telling Yahoo Sports: “I thank God the most, first above anything. He’s been there throughout all the lows and highs.”
He prays “before games, during games, after games”, adding: “During a game, it’s just asking him to be with me in any situation, whether you’re winning or losing. Help me play my personal best. I’m always praying.”
