Masters champ Scottie Scheffler’s faith in God was already a match made in heaven – and now the golfer’s Christian caddie makes it a holy trinity.
The US player had stormed to the world number one spot before beating Rory McIlroy by three shots at Augusta to don the famous green jacket.
It was the 25-year-old’s fourth victory in his previous six events during a remarkable two-month stretch starting soon after he teamed up with fellow believer Ted Scott.
The pair met at a Bible study group a year before working together. When Scott stopped working as caddie for born-again golfer Bubba Watson, Scheffler seized his chance.
“He called me up and said, ‘I really want to work with a Christian’,” said Scott.
The partnership began in November and, by February, they had their first win together, at the WM Phoenix Open. Two more PGA tour wins quickly followed, ahead of that biggest triumph of all at the Masters, which Scheffler was quick to place in context at his victory press conference.
“The reason I play golf is to glorify God and all he has done in my life, so for me, my identity is not a golf score.”
Another vital member of the Christian golfing team is Scheffler’s wife, Meredith. She had an inspirational message on the nerve-racking morning of his final Masters round, telling him: “If you win this golf tournament today, if you lose this golf tournament by 10 shots, if you never win another golf tournament again, I’m still going to love you, you are still going to be the same person. Jesus loves you and nothing changes.”
The Masters champ added: “Meredith always prays for peace because that’s what I want to feel on the golf course, is peace and have fun and just feel his presence. So that’s her prayer every day. That’s my prayer and I really felt that. I felt at peace.”
