When barrister Andrea Williams was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer she wondered if it was the end of her Christian ministry just months after it had been launched.
In 2008 Andrea had felt inspired to use her experience as a lawyer to establish a campaigning organisation that would defend biblical values. But just months later she lay in a hospital bed on a drip almost at the point of death and ready to throw in the towel.
The dedication of her team helped, and it was backed up by a powerful encounter with the Lord.
“In the middle of the night I was flooded with the presence of the Lord as I prayed and worshipped in my hospital bed that night.
“When you’ve been at that point of brokenness you know that whatever happens after that it’s all of the Lord. Your health, your strength, your ability, your organisation – all of it comes from him.
“Since that night nearly 13 years ago I take everything that the Lord has given me as an extraordinary gift. I tremble at his goodness but also at the task and the fact that I must honour him and do as well as I can each and every day.”
Andrea felt challenged to act as she saw UK legislation moving increasingly away from Christian principles, which led her to pioneer the work of Christian Concern and the Christian Legal Centre.
Today they continue to campaign over key issues including marriage, education, end of life and abortion.
“We communicate God’s truth in public debate especially in the media, politics and law,” Andrea says. “Together we stand in the face of a culture that has abandoned the Lord Jesus Christ and all the fruit that flows from him. I will continue to contend for God’s truth until my dying breath.”
