A bed poverty campaigner got the shock of her life when she was rewarded for her life-changing community work with a One Big Thank You from the One Show.
Bex Wilson has ensured more than 1,300 children living in poverty in Leeds have received beds, bedding, pyjamas and other essentials through her charity Zarach since setting it up in 2018.
Bex’s sister April nominated her to the One Show, and Bex, believing she was visiting the BBC studios in Salford to be filmed reading a story for CBeebies, was shocked as former Leeds legend and football pundit Chris Kamara emerged from a bear costume on the Bedtime Story set to begin the big reveal.
“I got an ‘unbelievable’ from Kammy!” said the stunned Christian campaigner and deputy head as Chris thanked her for her work.
Video messages from Bex’s favourite celebrities, including TV doctor Ranj Singh and author and illustrator Liz Puchon, were played to a delighted Bex, along with messages from family, friends and her grandparents.
“Thank you, that was amazing!” she said.
Bex told New Life she now has ambitious plans for the year ahead.
“My goal is to deliver 1,000 more bed bundles to children living in poverty and set up two news Zarach hubs in partnership with churches,” she said.
