Astronaut: Bible supports science

A former NASA astronaut who spent more than 500 days in space has spoken of how science affirmed his faith.

Jeff Williams, who orbited the Earth between 2000 and 2016, was speaking at the launch of an exhibit on science and Scripture at the Washington DC Museum of the Bible.

Williams, pictured above inset and one of his many NASA missions, has been heavily involved in scientific research relating to astronomical studies for more than 20 years, and said science and Christianity complement each other.

Speaking at the ‘Scripture and Science: Our Universe, Ourselves, Our Place’ exhibit, he told The Christian Post: “Science does not contradict Christianity. The contradiction comes into your philosophy going into your science. Your philosophy acknowledges a God that has either revealed Himself specifically in the Bible or your philosophy discounts or doesn’t allow a God. Then, you have to explain the existence of everything by chance over time.

“The Bible supports and informs science with the elements of the mathematical order of God’s Creation, our calling as humans, bearing the image of God, and how God has equipped us to explore and extract that order and utilise it for the glory of God and the good of mankind.”

Jeff Wyatt, executive producer of the exhibit’s designers, added: “Faith provides meaning, while science provides ‘the why’.

“This whole exhibition shows that science and religion have their place and don’t necessarily need each other, but they are in constant conversation with each other and the world. They are hand-in-hand. One inspires the other.”
