Christian organisations have reported stories of hope from Afghanistan as the country faces the future under Taliban rule.

Open Doors, which supports persecuted Christians, told how the parents of a baby girl born in Kabul on the evening of the Taliban takeover described her birth as a sign God has not given up on their country.

Iran-region charity Elam added God was at work in the lives of Afghan refugees, with one church reporting eight baptisms of new Christians, and a boy in a camp who recently came to faith reading his children’s Bible as his parents became evangelists.

The news comes as Afghan women and Christians remain extremely vulnerable to persecution.

“Sources confirm the Taliban are going door to door to weed out ‘unwanted elements’,” said Jan Vermeer, Communications Director for Open Doors Asia.

“Anybody exposed as a Christian faces severe punishment: kidnapping, torture, or even execution.

“But the birth of this baby in a Christian home reminds us that God can bring life in the midst of the deepest darkness – that he can bring hope.”

Afghanistan ranks second on Open Doors’ World Watch List of 50 countries where Christians face persecution.
